The Importance Of Root Canals

Root canals. It’s a dreaded procedure. Most people fear them. But when you need one, there is no avoiding it. Summit Family Dental can ease this process for you. First, let’s explain what a root canal is and what it does.

What Is A Root Canal?

Root canals obviously have a very bad reputation. Root canals are necessary if the nerve inside a tooth is no longer viable, meaning the tooth is dead. You can either remove the tooth or keep the tooth and remove the nerve tissue.

Process Of A Root Canal

The appointment itself will be similar to when you come in to have a filling done. That's the whole point of the appointment - to open up the tooth and clean it out. It just takes a bit longer. Your dentist will remove dead or necrotic tissue, clean it out, sanitize the tooth from the inside out, and then put a filling in the tooth's root, which will then be covered with a filling on the crown.

Post Root Canal Procedure

Our dentists will show you how to care for the tooth once the procedure has been done, but if you're experiencing any discomfort, you can typically take over-the-counter pain medicine. If you have a tooth that's bothering you and you're not sure if you need a root canal, give us a call and we'll certainly take a look at it. We can do some tests and imaging to make sure the tooth is in good shape.
